Pigs!

Basic Information:

Pigs are native to the Eurasian and African continents, ranging from Europe to the Pacific Islands
There are about 1 billion pigs alive at one time, making them one of the most populous large mammals in the world
Pigs are biologically similar to humans, making them frequently used for human medical research
Juvenile pigs are known as "piglets"

Breeding:

• Pigs have a gestation period of 113-116 days
• The females wean their piglets for 3-5 weeks
• Pigs usually have 10 piglets per litter and about 2 litters per year

Domestication:

Domesticated pigs are often farmed for their skin, called pork
Like factory farming with cows, mass farming techiques are used with pigs
They were first domesticated in 8500 BC

• While the United States is the worlds third largest prok comsumer, they have consistantly been the largest or second largest pork exporter
• An estimated $22.3 billion of personal income is supported by the pork business
• One of the more popular dishes is barbeque pork ribs
